New Desktop Computers

Beginning March 2012, we’re retiring the MSI socket 775 motherboards we have been using for the past two years, and moving to the new Intel socket 1155 motherboard and processor.

While socket 1155 uses the same size and type of heat-sink fan, the chip is entirely different and significantly faster. Comparing the 3ghz socket 775 E5700 with the 2600mhz socket 1155 G620, the G620 offers 50% more cache.  While the clock speed is 20% lower, the cache performance on the G620 is ten times higher.

How Often Should a Web Site be Replaced?

Once a web-site is established, how often should it be updated or replaced?

With respect to Google.com searches, there are at least two known criteria for web-site age that are related to search ranking and updates. Google will rank older web-sites ahead of newer web-sites to reflect an established site. However, it will rank sites with recently revised or added content above sites with unchanged content, since recent changes are more likely to reflect new and current information.

Since most sites include many static, unchanging pages, its important to include blog posting/news pages on a web-site to add fresh content. We recommend posting at least one news article per month, with one per week as an ideal target. This will ensure that your site is consistently ranked higher based on having new content. You can check here how your website design should be for better ranking.

Another aspect of web-site design is to determine when a site should be revised or replaced. Many people avoid changing a successful web-site out of fear of losing their Google search rank. Since Google uses a content based system for ranking sites, the rank of a site will only change when the content is less relevant. Changing the design and pages of a site will not affect the ranking, as long as the original content is maintained.

An easy method for evaluating a web-site for replacement involves using www.WebSiteGrader.com to check a web-site.  Any site that ranks below 50 should be evaluated for replacement and may require additional content and blog/news pages to score above 50.

We have checked many plain HTML sites that rank below 20 and improved their ranking above 50 by rebuilding them with WordPress content management software.

Repairing USB port failure

We regularly see computers with broken and failed USB ports being brought in for repair. While USB ports used to be a novelty and convenience on computers, increasingly computers require working USB ports for the keyboard and mouse.

Computer manufacturers have been phasing out the use of mini-DIN keyboards and mice and using USB ports instead. USB ports provide higher electrical current output, allowing keyboards and mice to add more features that require power.

Although USB ports are keyed so that they can only be inserted one way, it is possible to force the USB connector in upside down and damage the four pins. Since the +5v power and low voltage data signal pins are adjacent, a broken USB port can also destroy the USB controller chip and circuit on the motherboard. When this happens, all USB ports stop working and cannot be repaired.

For desktops that have mini-DIN keyboard and mouse connectors, they can be repaired using an add-on PCI USB card. It is also possible to install an add-on USB PCMCIA/PC-Card/ExpressCard in a laptop to provide USB ports when the internal ports have failed. For desktops that lack mini-DIN connectors and have failed USB ports, the main circuit board (motherboard) should be replaced.

Thailand Flooding Affects Hard Drive Prices

The flooding in Thailand in October and November 2011 forced the closing of all of the hard drive assembly factories for Western Digital. Seagate does not manufacture or assemble hard drives in Thailand, but it does rely on suppliers located in Thailand, so the flooding prevented Seagate factories from receiving parts needed to assemble hard drives. This shutdown had an immediate affect on the price of hard drives, as supply was reduced and this increased competition between distributors and computer manufacturers to vie for the reduced supply.

The result of the flooding was an immediate increase in the price of hard drives. Prior to the flooding, we were selling 500gb SATA hard drives for $99 and 1tb SATA hard drives for $149. Following the factory shutdowns, prices have increased to $149 for 500gb and $199 for 1tb drives.

While the prices of hard disc drives were affected, solid state SSD drives were not affected, since they use memory chips that are manufactured in other countries.

As of December 2011, Western Digital has been able to resume production of hard drives, so we expect to see a return to normal pricing by January 2012.

Improving Google search results through WordPress

Since we began offering web-sites using WordPress open source content management software, we have seen exceptional gains in Google search results.

Using the free on-line evaluation tool at www.WebSiteGrader.com to compare results, we have seen significant improvements for sites that changed from plain HTML to using WordPress.

For example, we converted the plain HTML web-site for www.NorthtownsOrthopedics.com into a WordPress site. We retained and re-used all of the original content. The original HTML version of the web-site scored 10 at WebSiteGrader. After converting to WordPress, the site scored 75.

For the Law Offices of Peter Grubea, the results were even more dramatic. The original 10-page HTML site also scored 10 at WebSiteGrader. After adding 100 pages of content, blog posting and plug-ins, the site scored 94. The result is that the site consistently ranks at the top of Google searches.

Sites created in WordPress achieve these fantastic results purely through the quality of the web-pages, not through any tricks or shortcuts. If you have a poorly performing site that isn’t showing up in Google searches, contact us about getting it converted to WordPress to improve your search results.
